What Do Yajuj Majuj Eat & Drink? The Lake They Will Drain Dry — Gog and Magog Part 9

In Islamic tradition, Yajuj and Majuj, known in English as Gog and Magog, are a people whose emergence is described as one of the major signs before the Day of Judgement. The Qur'an mentions them in Surah Al-Kahf in connection with Dhul-Qarnayn and the barrier built to restrain them, and again in Surah Al-Anbiya, where their release is described. Later narrations and works of history and exegesis expand on those references, describing their vast numbers, their spread across the land, and an appetite so great that ordinary food and water are said to be consumed on an enormous scale.

The best-known account of their drinking concerns Lake Tiberias, also called the Sea of Galilee. A long narration in Sahih Muslim describes the first of them passing the lake and drinking from it, and the last of them passing later and saying that there was once water there. The point of the image, as commentators explain it, is not a precise menu but scale: there are so many of them, and they drink so much, that a large lake is left dry. Other reports in the wider tradition describe them eating what they find as they advance, including crops, livestock and supplies left behind, which again stresses abundance in number rather than a special diet ordained for them.

That distinction matters when the story is retold. The sources do not present a detailed list of dishes for Yajuj and Majuj, and claims that go beyond the Qur'an and well-known narrations should be treated with care. What the tradition does emphasise is consequence: people will take refuge, supplies will be strained, and the event will end, in the narration, with divine intervention rather than human force. Read in that way, the drained lake is a memorable picture of numbers and thirst, and a reminder, for believers, of the limits of human power. Watch our short summary below for the key points in under a minute, with the main narration explained simply
