Police Will Never 'Digitally Arrest' You — How the Digital Arrest Scam Works in India
Imagine receiving a video call from someone in a police uniform. The caller says your name is linked to a serious crime, shows what looks like an official identity card, and warns that you are now under 'digital arrest'. You are told not to disconnect, not to tell anyone, and to transfer money quickly to clear your name. It sounds frightening, and that fear is exactly what the scammers are counting on.
Here is the clear truth: there is no legal concept called 'digital arrest' in India. Real police do not arrest anyone over a video call, they do not keep a person under surveillance through a phone camera as a form of arrest, and they do not demand money to close or clear a case. Officers from the police, the CBI, customs or any other agency will not ask you to move money to a 'safe' account, pay a fine instantly by bank transfer, or share financial details to prove your innocence.
Scammers try to make the lie believable. They may use fake uniforms, office-like backgrounds, forged documents, official-sounding language and threats of immediate arrest or frozen accounts. They often insist on secrecy and constant contact, because isolation stops the victim from checking the story with family, a bank or the real police. Some victims have reportedly lost very large sums after being pressured in this way, which is why treating any such call as suspicious from the first minute is so important.
If you get a call like this, hang up. Do not transfer any money, however urgent the demand sounds. Do not share an OTP, bank details, card numbers or remote-access codes, and do not install any app the caller asks for. Take time to verify independently using a number or office you trust, rather than calling back a number the caller gave you. Talk to a family member or your bank, and report the attempt promptly on the cybercrime helpline 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in if you are in India. Pausing, checking and reporting can stop the scam before any money is lost.
