Iron + Molten Copper: How the Great Wall Against Gog and Magog Was Built
This article continues Part 3 of our Yajuj Majuj series and looks closely at how the great barrier associated with Dhul-Qarnayn was built. In the Qur'anic account in Surah Al-Kahf, Dhul-Qarnayn travels until he reaches a place between two mountains, where he meets a people who barely understand his language. They explain that Yajuj and Majuj, known in English as Gog and Magog, are causing corruption in the land, and they ask him to build a barrier between them and the invaders. In return they offer payment, but he refuses their money and says what his Lord has given him is better. He asks only for their help with labour, and then he sets out his plan.
The method is described in clear stages. First, large blocks of iron are brought and stacked in the gap between the two mountains until the space is filled to the level of the two sides. Next, the workers are told to blow, using bellows, until the iron becomes like fire from the intense heat. Finally, molten copper is brought and poured over the hot iron. As it cools and hardens, the copper seals the gaps between the blocks and binds the whole structure together into a single, smooth and solid barrier. The result is described as a wall that Gog and Magog could neither climb over, because its surface was smooth, nor dig through, because it was so strong and thick.
This construction helps explain why the barrier became such a powerful image in the story. It was not presented as an ordinary fence, but as a carefully engineered structure made from two metals working together: iron for strength and copper as a sealant. Within the wider Gog and Magog account, the barrier holds them back for a long period, yet the story also teaches that it will not last forever. When the appointed time arrives, it will be levelled, and Yajuj Majuj will emerge.
