How Powerful Is the USA? | Most Powerful Nations on Earth #1
Welcome to the first episode of Most Powerful Nations on Earth, a new Daily Info Dose series that ranks countries by their military strength, economy, technology and global influence. We begin with the country that has set the pace for almost a century: the United States of America. So, just how powerful is the USA?
Start with the money behind the military. According to SIPRI figures for 2024, the United States spent about $997 billion on its armed forces. That is roughly 37 percent of all military spending on the planet — more than any other nation by a very wide margin, and enough to fund the world's most advanced forces in every domain at once.
That spending buys reach no rival can match. The US Navy sails 11 aircraft carriers, each one a floating air base, while most countries have none. On land and in the air, America maintains around 750 bases in about 80 countries, so its forces can respond quickly almost anywhere on Earth.
Behind that conventional power sits a vast nuclear deterrent. The United States holds an estimated 5,044 nuclear warheads, delivered by submarines, intercontinental missiles and strategic bombers. This nuclear triad is designed to make any direct attack on America unthinkable, and it underpins its security guarantees to allies around the world.
Power is not only military. The US economy is the largest on Earth, with a GDP of roughly $29.3 trillion. The US dollar accounts for about 57 percent of the world's foreign exchange reserves, making it the global reserve currency. That gives Washington enormous influence over trade, finance and sanctions.
Finally, America leads in technology and space. Its technology companies shape how the world communicates and computes, its universities attract talent from everywhere, and its space programme — from NASA to a fast-growing commercial sector — keeps it ahead in satellites, exploration and the technology of the future.
Put it together — unmatched military spending, global bases, a huge economy, the world's reserve currency and leadership in technology and space — and the United States remains, for now, the most powerful nation on Earth. Watch the full video above for the complete breakdown.
