How powerful is India, really? It is the world's most populous country — about 1.45 billion people — and analysts rank its military fourth on the planet, behind only the USA, Russia and China. In May 2025 it was tested in live combat against Pakistan, in the first missile and air exchange ever fought between two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Start with people and money. UN estimates put India's population ahead of China's since 2023. Its active military is about 1.45 million personnel, the world's second largest, and SIPRI estimates its 2025 military spending at about $92.1 billion — fifth in the world and roughly eight times Pakistan's $11.9 billion on the same SIPRI series.
The forces are built for two fronts: a mass army of about 1.24 million facing Pakistan to the west and China along the Himalayan Line of Actual Control; an air force mixing French Rafales, Russian-built Su-30s and the home-built Tejas; and the Indian Ocean's dominant navy, with two aircraft carriers including the home-built INS Vikrant, plus nuclear and conventional submarines.
The deterrent is a full nuclear triad. Analysts estimate about 180–190 warheads. The Agni-5 ballistic missile flies 5,000+ kilometres — enough to reach all of China — and was tested with MIRV technology in March 2024. Arihant-class submarines provide a sea-based second strike, and the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is fired from land, ships, submarines and aircraft, and now exported. India's declared doctrine is credible minimum deterrence with No First Use.
May 2025 is handled the same way as in Episode #8: India said it struck militant infrastructure and Pakistani bases and intercepted Pakistani strikes; Pakistan claimed it shot down several Indian jets including Rafales; India acknowledged losses without confirming numbers. Both sets are claims, and no winner is named.
The verdict of Episode #9: a genuine top-four military with a rising home industrial base, held back by long-standing import dependence and a per-capita income of only about $2,800 on an IMF-projected $4.19 trillion economy. Regionally dominant, globally still a tier below the top three — but climbing. Next episode: how powerful is Saudi Arabia?
