How Powerful Is France? | Most Powerful Nations on Earth #3
France is not the largest country on Earth, nor the richest or the most populous, yet few nations carry as much weight in world affairs. With a population of about 68 million people and an economy worth around $3.37 trillion — the seventh largest in the world — France combines economic scale, military strength and global reach in a way that keeps it firmly in the top league of nations.
Much of that reach comes from geography. France's overseas territories are scattered across the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, giving it the world's second-largest maritime zone, covering more than 10 million square kilometres of ocean. Because its territories span the globe, France also stretches across 12 time zones — more than any other country — so the sun, quite literally, never sets on French territory.
That global footprint is backed by serious military power. France spends roughly $65 billion a year on defence and maintains a fully independent armed forces, including around 290 nuclear warheads — the fourth largest arsenal in the world. Those warheads are carried mainly by its fleet of four ballistic missile submarines, which keep at least one boat on patrol at all times, ready to deter any attack.
The symbol of that power is the Charles de Gaulle, France's flagship and the only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in service outside the United States Navy. Together with its veto as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, this military strength allows Paris to act — and to be heard — on the world stage in its own right, with the added weight of Europe behind it.
France's influence is not only military. It is a leader in aerospace through Airbus, a global powerhouse in luxury goods, and one of the world's great agricultural producers and exporters. Its language, culture and diplomacy give it a soft power that extends far beyond its borders in Europe.
Nowhere is that appeal clearer than in tourism. France welcomed 102 million international visitors in 2025, making it the most visited country on the planet. Watch Episode #3 of our Nation Power series below to see how these pieces fit together, and why France still plays in the top league of world powers.
