How Powerful Is China? | China vs USA | Most Powerful Nations on Earth #7

How powerful is China, really? It is the only country the United States officially calls its pacing rival — the benchmark against which Washington measures every new weapon and every budget. In one generation China has gone from bicycles and rice fields to aircraft carriers and space stations. But is it already America's equal?

Start with money and industry. China's economy is worth about twenty trillion dollars — second only to the United States in nominal terms, and the largest on Earth by purchasing power. It is the world's biggest manufacturer and exporter, leading the planet in electric vehicles, batteries, solar panels, drones and shipbuilding, with a record trade surplus of about 1.2 trillion dollars.

Then the forces. The PLA fields roughly two million active personnel, the largest standing military in the world, on a declared budget of about 249 billion dollars. The Pentagon estimates its navy is now the largest by hull count — more than 370 ships and submarines, three aircraft carriers, and the world's biggest shipbuilding capacity behind it — although the US Navy still leads in tonnage, nuclear carriers and global reach.

The missile wall is China's sharpest edge. Its Rocket Force holds the world's largest land-based missile arsenal, including anti-ship ballistic missiles designed to hold US carriers at risk, the DF-17 hypersonic glide vehicle, the Guam-range DF-26 and the intercontinental DF-41. The Pentagon estimates its operational nuclear warheads passed 600 in 2024 and will exceed 1,000 by 2030.

The limits are just as real. China has one overseas base and one formal ally, while US allies and partners ring its coastline. It has not fought a war since 1979, imports most of its energy through sea lanes it does not control, and faces a shrinking, ageing population plus a property-sector drag at home.

The verdict of Episode #7: China is already a regional superpower — in Asian waters the gap with America narrows every year — but globally the United States still leads in carriers, alliances, bases and experience. China is not yet America's equal everywhere. It is simply moving faster than anyone else.
